Data has become more pervasive as almost every organization uses data and analytics (D&A) for strategic and operational decisions. But a D&A organization needs to adopt the right data model, have a data-driven culture, drive business value and contribute to stakeholder objectives.

"The core activity to the success of data and analytics is having a data-driven culture. A data-driven culture, associated strategy and operating model are often overlooked," says Jorgen Heizenberg, VP and analyst - data, analytics and AI - at Gartner.

He suggests organizations should focus on how D&A can contribute to the overall data-driven vision of the organization and how that reflects in the business outcomes for all stakeholders.

Organizations also need to identify and adopt an optimal D&A model to become more data-driven, balancing centralized and decentralized functions.

Heizenberg recommends a hybrid model, specifically the hub and spoke model that balances control (in the hub) and enables agility in the spoke.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Heizenberg also discusses:

  • The importance of a data-driven culture;
  • The most critical activities to a D&A team's success;
  • How to choose the right data model.

Heizenberg combines D&A trends and best practices with a human-centric focus. His coverage areas are D&A strategy and operating model; data-driven culture and behavior; D&A organizations, roles, and skills; and external service providers (consultancies and system integrators). He has a background in D&A consulting with over two decades of experience in planning, designing and implementing D&A. He believes D&A is about people.
