Understanding - and accepting - technological innovations is crucial for regulatory bodies to analyze trends, predict risks and offer guidance to drive efficiencies. Especially in the healthcare sector, where addressing the specific needs of various demographics and improving overall patient care is priority, regulators must catch up. "As a regulator, we want to govern but also add value to the sector," she said.

"Things like robotic surgery - they deal with human life, so we've got to look at it carefully as a regulator, how we bring that into good use … but at the same time, we can't be completely resistant to the technology," Dr. Jairam-Owthar said.

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group, Dr. Jairam-Owthar also discussed:

  • Emerging technologies and trends that will shape the healthcare sector in the coming years;
  • The role of regulatory bodies in setting guidelines for responsible use of AI in healthcare;
  • The need for balanced and diverse data in AI to create fair, effective healthcare solutions.

Dr. Jairam-Owthar has more than 20 years of experience in multiple senior leadership roles across sectors. She sits on the boards of directors of several organizations. Previously, she was the CIO at the City of Johannesburg Metro Services and the chief director at ICT Stellenbosch University.
