Formula 1's significant transformation in race management over the years is attributable to a robust and scalable digital infrastructure. The sport has recently shifted to a remote operation and production model, reducing the need to transport hardware globally. This approach not only minimized the technical footprint but also enhanced F1's data processing capabilities.

"Virtual platforms and advanced graphics enable faster data processing and real-time responses, whether trackside or at the base. This allows us to generate and display the graphics in real time, bringing the drama and excitement of F1 to millions of fans around the world," said Amie Smith, head of IT systems and support, F1.

A typical race weekend generates approximately 500 terabytes of data, and F1 uses virtual platforms utilizing containerization to efficiently manage this data. This technology enables the simultaneous processing of multiple data streams, boosting system resilience and efficiency.

Edge computing also plays a pivotal role by processing data closer to the source, reducing latency and enabling faster decision-making, which is critical in a sport where milliseconds matter, Smith said. In 2022, Lenovo became a key partner, supplying IT systems such as computers, tablets, servers, workstations and software to support F1's tech operations.
