As organizations emerge from the pandemic, business leaders are taking a more holistic view of resilience. There is also a renewed interest in digital transformation and critical infrastructure.

While discussing the top cybersecurity predictions for 2022-2023, Richard Addiscott, senior director analyst at Gartner, says a key observation is the attacks on critical infrastructure. He adds, there is a crucial need to take a more in-depth view of the security postures around critical infrastructure.

"We are seeing digital transformations recommencing, as some organizations took a more bearish approach to their digital projects over the last two years. But they are doing that at pace, and they are looking to grow and recover economically," Addiscott says.

He also said that boards are ramping up their investments, "but rather than giving all that funding directly to the CIO, they are now allocating that funding to the business units to progress on their digital initiatives."

Another trend observed is that hybrid work environments are becoming a norm. According to the Gartner 2021 Digital Worker Experience survey, 65% of respondents prefer to work from home and from a combination of locations (home, office, other locations). Only 14% want to work directly and only from home.

"We are seeing a significant shift in that, and it will cause some interesting nuances for the security program," Addiscott says.

In this video interview, Addiscott also discusses:

  • What are the security challenges faced by security leaders due to hybrid work models;
  • Why are security leaders pursuing vendor consolidation initiatives;
  • Why organizations fail to realize the benefits of a zero trust approach to security;
  • How are performance requirements related to risk built into employment contracts.

Addiscott works with information and cybersecurity leaders covering topics focused on improving security risk management maturity and outcomes, optimizing organizational security risk postures, and demonstrating clear alignment between security and strategic business outcomes.
