The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is entrusted with overseeing the U.S. national energy policy and is responsible for managing the research and development of nuclear power and nuclear weapons through its 17 strategically significant laboratories. Its mission involves formulating and implementing national energy policies, ensuring the availability of reliable, affordable and clean energy sources, and promoting energy efficiency and conservation. To accomplish this monumental task, DOE relies on a robust and secure technology infrastructure.

According to CIO Ann Dunkin, innovation is at the core of DOE's technology strategy, and the pandemic has served as a catalyst for advancing its transformation agenda. "At DOE, we have made significant strides in areas such as establishing a low-code software factory, developing a 5G catalog and implementing cybersecurity resilience best practices," she said.

Additionally, DOE has dedicated a 100-member team to research and establish the best practices for AI usage within the organization.

Dunkin manages the IT portfolio and modernization at DOE. She oversees the department's cybersecurity efforts and leads technology innovation and digital transformation. Prior to this, she served under the Obama Administration as CIO of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
