Edge Projects Need Self-Sustained Funding

Lack of Budget and Concrete Business Use Cases Slow Down Edge Adoption in Business

Organizations that have taken a cloud-first strategy are now considering edge to the cloud as the next milestone in their digital transformation journeys. But there are some speedbumps to overcome, and businesses must have concrete use cases and funding for edge projects.

"Edge cloud presents an opportunity for enterprises to unlock the true business transformation, essentially where data meets the physical world," says Mili Iyengar, managing director for intelligent edge sales globally at Accenture.

Iyenger notes that enterprises across industries are in the experimentation phase and at different maturity levels with their edge implementations. Yet, edge adoption is fraught with challenges, including budget restrictions and a lack of business use cases for large-scale rollouts.

"The biggest challenge that I see is how [businesses] continue to feed their current brownfield implementation and then do the transformation," she says. "Edge is extremely heterogeneous. For any customer to truly adopt edge, they need to look at simple things such as the model of cameras they will use for computer vision - and tie that with what they currently have, and how they can make the switch over a period of time."

Iyenger advises enterprises to adopt "self-sustained funding" for edge projects. "Organizations that deployed a layered foundation first and then got the use cases on top, or set the technical foundation, will be able to scale their use cases a little more easily than others," Iyenger says.

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group, Iyenger also discusses:

  • Enterprise adoption trends;
  • Business use cases for IoT and edge computing;
  • Recommendations for CIOs.

As chief strategist, Iyengar helps Fortune 500 companies reimagine their operations and create new revenue streams using intelligent edge and IoT technologies. Her depth of experience includes leading large-scale businesses and digital transformations, overseeing business cases and ROIs from scaled rollouts and implementing emerging technologies.
