Data has become a key tenet of business. To derive value from data, all stakeholders in the data and analytics organization need to speak a common language. It is also imperative for organizations to have good data literacy and data culture.

"One of the biggest things that D&A leaders miss when they aim for value is they don't integrate with the workflow of the business," says Jitendra Subramanyam, VP and team manager at Gartner.

Subramanyam believes organizational data models are good to have, but business leaders need to take action in order to derive value from such models.

"If you don't close that gap, the data model could be excellent but will derive no value at all. That's where we find the most pitfalls," he says.

He recommends a common language for the business and technical teams to bridge the gaps in domain knowledge.

Data Literacy

Speaking about data literacy, Subramanyam says this is "absolutely the best time to be in D&A." He says business leaders have more access to D&A, but there is "a big gap between the potential value and the actual value." He attributes this to a lack of data literacy.

"Being able to bridge that gap in some way that allows business users to take advantage of the vast amount of D&A that they have at their fingertips is one of the reasons why data literacy has become such a big deal for CDOs," he says.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Subramanyam also discusses:

  • How chief data officers can drive business value;
  • Fostering data literacy across the organization;
  • Key D&A trends to expect in 2023.

Subramanyam leads a team of Gartner analysts focused on the key challenges of chief data and analytics officers and the practical steps they take to overcome these challenges. The outputs of the research are case studies, tools and templates that provide practical guidance in four areas of D&A: value generation, quality, algorithmic credibility and talent.
