AI and Data Expert Jose Pedro Almeida on Radical Changes Needed to Transform Gen AI
Unlike traditional AI, where basic mathematical models were slowly trained to automate tasks, generative AI’s fundamental models are transformative and lightning-fast. So much so that the compute power of these models is multiplying manifold every year. But to harness the true potential of gen AI, both executive and tech leaders have to ensure that the organizational and technology foundations undergo sweeping reforms.

Besides appointing a chief AI officer or chief data officer, the IT layer needs to decouple from the data layer. "A distinct layer, which I refer to as the data and digital platform layer, needs to be established," said Jose Pedro Almeida, top chief AI strategist. "Until organizations develop their own intelligence layer to interpret the data, this layer should serve as a digital twin, enabling the business to operate at the speed of AI rather than the speed of IT."
The separation of layers sets the foundation for effectively utilizing AI technologies. "Organizations can leverage gen AI in two ways: first, through everyday AI to achieve quick wins with tools such as Microsoft Copilot; second, through transformational AI to enable personalization at speed and scale, driving game-changing outcomes," Almeida said.
